What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of movement exercise named after its creator, Joseph Pilates.

This method is unique in that it will tone your body from the inside out. Pilates will help you to develop stronger core muscles, and from there, allow you to work the rest of your body properly and in good alignment. Not only does it help develop longer, leaner muscles, but Pilates helps to recreate healthy movement patterns, which comes in handy during everyday activities. This will often help to relieve those aches and pains that many people live with on a daily basis. If practiced consistently, Pilates will help to increase your flexibility, your body balance, and give you better posture.

Who is Ron Fletcher, and what is Fletcher Pilates®?

Fletcher Pilates® is named after master teacher Ron Fletcher, one of the few first generation teachers who studied directly under Joseph and Clara Pilates. Along with studying Pilates, Ron Fletcher danced with the modern dance pioneer Martha Graham, performed on Broadway, and was lead choreographer of The International Ice Capades. With the blessing of Clara Pilates, he brought the work to Los Angeles and opened the Ron Fletcher Studio for Body Contrology, introducing the Pilates method to the west coast. It was here where he began refining and developing the work that has ultimately become known as Fletcher Pilates. For more info on Fletcher Pilates go here.

Do you have to be a dancer/athlete to do Pilates?

Absolutely not!

One of the great things about Pilates is its versatility, so that people of all levels can practice and progress at their own pace. Although it is a great workout for dancers and athletes, beginners are welcome and will be taught how to work at their level. Because Pilates has a language of its own, and since we all have our own muscle imbalances and physical history, we suggest that all new clients begin their Pilates journey with a few private sessions.

How often should I do Pilates?

Although you will benefit from one class a week, to see the best results, Pilates is ideally practiced 2-3 times a week. This can be in the form of privates, duets, trios, or group classes. Also, the more focus and attention you put in to it, the more you will get out of it!

What do I wear to my class/session?

It is best to wear form-fitting workout wear, and ideally have your hair pulled off of your face and neck. This is so the instructor can see your body, and correct appropriately, so that you can see quicker results! Pilates is performed either barefoot or while wearing toe socks.
